HOW DOES BOTOX WORK? As we get older we all acquire wrinkles. These occur as a result of a number of factors: • Continual use of facial muscles for expression, eating and talking cause the skin to line and wrinkle over time. • Sun damage occurs because the sun can break down the structure of the skin by damaging DNA. This in turn leads to wrinkle and pigmentation. • Pollution in the atmosphere and from smoking cause free radicals to build up in the body which have the effect of damaging the skin in a similar way to the sun. Botox (Botulinum Toxin) has been used medically since 1973 to relax muscles in conditions such as : • Eye squints • Repeated eyelid twitching • Muscle spasms seen in conditions such as cerebral palsy. Botox does this by affecting the nerve supply to these affected muscles and thus making them relax. It was discovered that as a “side effect” of treating the eye conditions facial lines were softened and even eradicated temporarily. Botox has therefore been used for treatment of facial wrinkles for the last 20 years. It is safe and has been approved by the FDA for such treatment. WHAT AREAS OF THE FACE IS BOTOX USED IN? Botox can be used to treat: • Frown lines • Crows feet • Lip lines (caused by smoking) • Forehead wrinkles • Eye brow lift Chin puckering It can also help with ageing signs in the neck. WHAT DOES TREATMENT ENTAIL? Botox is safe and relatively pain free. The site to be treated can be anaesthetised using an anaesthetic cream if desired and then a number of small injections are carried out using a very small needle (5mm) long. The injections can cause a minor sting lasting 1 to 2 seconds but this is minimized by the cream. Treatment takes less than 5 minutes while the anaesthetic cream takes about 20 minutes to take effect Results are not instantaneous but can be seen from 3 to 7 days post treatment. Each treatment usually lasts 6 to 9 months depending on the individual. However repeated treatments tend to last longer. ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS? Any side effects tend to be minimal, are transient and relatively rare. These may include: Slight bruising at the injection site Mild headache Possible eyelid droop which can last 1 to 2 weeks. This is a very rare complication and can be minimized by not lying down (for any length of time) for 4 hours following treatment. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
